The rural poor migrate to other countries within or outside of the region in search for temporary or permanent work. This study looked at economically motivated migration in Central America and provides a characterization of the migrant population; description of the juridical-political and institutional framework; analysis of the social and economic effect on migrants, their families and countries; identification of initiatives of international cooperation, governments, civil society, the private sector and the population. Main opportunities and obstacles were analyzed with the goal to improve the vulnerable situation of migrants through the help of the Regional Unit for Technical Assistance (RUTA) and its associated agencies.
