Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can be understood as the responsibility of private organizations towards the impacts of their decisions and activities in society and the environment. It requires transparent and ethical behaviour in accordance with legislation, which contributes to the sustainable development and well being of the company's stakeholders (clients, providers, employees, etc.) and the society at large.
CSR goes further than philanthropy. Its goal is to contribute to a more equal growth and development with the core business of the company. It aims at creating value, developing capacities and promoting innovation.
Public Private Partnerships (PPP) for Development are a means to accomplish CSR. It refers to the shared responsibility and interaction between public institutions and private organizations, aimed at generating value for a sustainable development.
Aliarse (Spanish for "to ally") is an initiative of public and private entities, which aims at generating knowledge and promoting social responsibility by public private interactions for the sustainable development of Costa Rica. One of its activities is the systematization of successful experiences of social responsibility and PPP's from its collaborators. We developed the case of the Costa Rican Petroleum Refinery (RECOPE), a state company that supplies 70% of the country's energy needs. The complete publication can be downloaded here
