Challenge Fund for SME

The Multilateral Investment Fund (FOMIN) of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) with the collaboration of INCAE, as the central implementation unit, developed the program “Challenge Fund for SME Competitiveness.” This initiative sought to improve the competitiveness of small and micro businesses through the strengthening of alliances in Central America and the Dominican Republic. The program attended more than 530 SMEs through 24 projects in 7 countries. In 2008, 14 of the projects in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and El Salvador were evaluated and in 2009 the final global evaluation of the program was conducted.

The photography shows women working with "Xate" (an ornamental plant) in the Maya Biosphere Reserve of Petén, Guatemala. The goal of this project is to strengthen capacities in the local communities, generate employment and improve product prices by cutting out intermediaries, via the sustainable use of resources of the Reserve in order to preserve it.
